At approximately 6 a.m. on October 22 police responded to a robbery that had just occurred at a residence on Danforth Road in Halifax. Two men, one of whom was armed with what was believed to be a firearm broke in to a residence and demanded money from the resident.  The victim was able to flee the residence without being physically injured. This is not a random incident as one of the suspects is known to the victim 

At approximately 5 a.m. on October 23 officers arrested the man who had been in possession of the firearm at a residence in Halifax. 

Troy Robert Hann, 41, of Halifax is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court today to face charges of:

• Robbery with a firearm
• Assault with a weapon
• Uttering threats to cause death
• Careless use of a firearm
• Pointing a firearm
• Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
• Possession of a firearm contrary to order
• Breaking and enter

The second suspect is described at a white man who is described approximately 5’11”, 150 lbs. with red curly hair.

RCMP investigates suspicious fire and damage 

October 26, 2020, Ingonish Beach, Nova Scotia… Ingonish Beach RCMP along with fire departments from Ingonish Beach and Ingonish responded to a structure fire on Beach Rd. in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park at 7 a.m. on October 24. The structure was fully engulfed on arrival and is believed to be suspicious in nature.

Throughout the course of the day, investigators learned of other structures that were damaged by fire including the Warren Lake and Black Brook park facilities. No one was injured in theses incidents.

All incidents are believed to be linked and the investigation is ongoing.

At 6:27 p.m. on the 22^nd of October, Halifax Regional Police responded to a report of a Weapons calls with an injured adult male in the 0-50 block of Primrose Street, Dartmouth.  Multiple officers responded to the scene and located an adult male with life threatening injuries.  The area was blocked to traffic for a period of time.

Update: Shortly after 1:00 a.m., the victim, an adult male (25 yrs) passed away.  The name of the victim is being withheld pending next of kin notification.  The investigation is now a Homicide.  There is no suspect(s) information at this time.

Investigators with the Major Crime Unit of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division and Forensic Identification Unit are conducting the investigation.

RCMP charge man as a result of vehicle fire in New Edinburgh

October 18, 2020, New Edinburgh, Nova Scotia…Meteghan RCMP have laid charges in relation to a vehicle fire that occurred on Tuesday October 13, 2020.

On October 13, Meteghan RCMP were called to a disturbance outside a lobster pound in New Edinburgh.  While on scene, police extinguished a vehicle that was on fire and heavily damaged.

The RCMP began the investigation and have charged 31-year-old, Michael Burton Nickerson, of Yarmouth County with Arson – Damage to Property.

Nickerson was arrested yesterday afternoon, October 17. He has been released from custody on conditions and is scheduled to appear in Digby Provincial Court December 21 at 9:30 a.m.

The RCMP has a significant presence in the Meteghan area, including general duty officers from several local detachments; officers from across the division and RCMP in Prince Edward Island with specialized training in de-escalation and crowd control. Our Division Liaison Team is also fully engaged in the area, continuing their work to build and maintain relationships among those involved.

The investigation is ongoing.

The Nova Scotia RCMP will continue to take steps to ensure that those who unlawfully interfere with or threaten the safety of any person or property may be held accountable in accordance with the laws of Canada.

Halifax Regional Police are investigating a break and enter into the Coast Gas station at 200 Pleasant Street, Dartmouth that occurred today at approximately 6:30 a.m.

Staff at the business arrived to open the store and discovered the front window had been broken and the cash register and a quantity of cash were taken.

At 10:45 a.m. Police responded to the One Stop Shop at 269 Windmill Road, Dartmouth and after staff discovered the window had been broken and the cash register and a quantity of money were taken.

The investigations are ongoing and are in the early stages.  Police are attempting to determine if the incidents are related to each other and to other recent break and enters in the Municipality.

October 17, 2020, Middle West Pubnico, Nova Scotia… Yarmouth County RCMP is investigating suspicious fire that occurred to a building on Hwy. 335 in Middle West Pubnico.

Around midnight, Yarmouth County RCMP and West Pubnico Fire Department as well as other mutual aid fire departments responded to a building fire at a fish plant. The fish plant incurred significant damage, it was not occupied at the time and no employees were injured, a man is in hospital with life threatening injuries believed related to the fire.

The investigation has determined the fire to be suspicious and the investigation is ongoing.

Don’t let your cottage be targeted by thieves this winter

October 16, 2020, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia… Every year, the RCMP responds to multiple reports of break and enters at cottages and cabins during the winter months.

Break and enters are frequently crimes of opportunity at seasonal properties as they are often located in isolated areas, with decreased chances of criminal activity being noticed. This month, many cottage owners will be closing up their seasonal homes and Nova Scotia RCMP is offering some tips to keep seasonal homes free of thieves this winter:

• Remove all valuables from your cottage (including firearms);
• Lock / secure all doors and windows;
• Ensure all windows are covered by closing curtains or blinds;
• Ensure all out buildings (e.g., garage or shed) are secured. Remove valuables;
• Don’t leave tools and items outside that could be used to break into your cottage. This includes ladders;
• Ensure that your cottage is visited on a regular basis. Consider using a trail camera;
• Ensure your property is well lit, with motion sensors and timers on lights;
• Install an alarm system with a local contact person if you don’t live nearby.

“Consider forming a ‘cottage watch’ program with other cottage owners to have properties checked on during the off-season,” says Nova Scotia RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Lisa Croteau. “The more difficult you make it for thieves to gain access to your property, the better.”

The RCMP will always check with neighbours if a break-in occurs in an area. We encourage community members to call to report suspicious activity and help to reduce property crime. Taking note of details such as a vehicle description, a license plate number, or a description of a driver can be a big help and lead to the recovery of stolen property and charges against those responsible.

Today is the tenth anniversary of the murder of Donald Jermaine Stevenson and investigators with the Special Investigation Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division continue to investigate the case.

At 8:06 p.m. on October 16, 2010, Halifax Regional Police received a call about a shooting inside a residence in the 0-100 block of Jarvis Lane in Halifax. Upon arrival, officers located 21-year-old Donald Stevenson who had been shot and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigators believe that a man wearing a skull mask and dark clothing entered the residence and shot Donald. The suspect fled the scene on foot, heading northbound across Duffus Street onto Dartmouth Avenue where he got into the passenger seat of a silver SUV. The vehicle left northbound on Dartmouth Avenue, turning onto Rector Street in an unknown direction. Investigators do not believe this was a random act.

Investigators believe there are people who have information that could help solve Donald’s murder. We hope that the passage of time encourages them to do the right thing and share what they know with police. It is never too late to come forward and the smallest piece of information may be just what is needed to progress the investigation into Douglas’ murder.

This case is part of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice for Major Unsolved Crimes Program, which offers cash rewards of up to $150,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for specified major unsolved crimes. Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a person of interest in relation to an incident involving anti-Semitic stickers that is being investigated as a hate crime.

On September 9 police were alerted to a number of stickers with an anti-Semitic message that had been posted in the area of South Park Street, Spring Garden Road and Summer Street in Halifax. Members of the General Investigation Section of the Integrated Investigation Division are investigating this incident as a hate crime.

Investigators would like to speak with a person of interest who is described as a white man in his 60’s, approximately 5’ 6”, with a slim build and clean shaven. He was wearing a round brim hat, a brown or tan jacket or trench coat, and may have been carrying an old-style suitcase or briefcase. This man may frequent the areas of Spring Garden Road, Quinpool Road or the area near the Mount Olivet Cemetery. Investigators believe this man may have information that could assist with the investigation into this incident.

Police would like to reinforce that such actions within our community are unacceptable and will be thoroughly investigated. Halifax Regional Police are investigating a robbery that occurred this morning in Halifax.

At 12:59 a.m. on October 8^th,  2020, officers responded to a report of a robbery at the Needs Convenience Store located at 6130 Chebucto Road, Halifax. A lone male suspect entered the Convenience Store produced a knife and went behind the counter and demanded cigarettes and cash from the lone male employee. The male employee opened the cash registry and gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect opened the cigarette cabinet and took an undisclosed amount of cigarette packages. The suspect removed an orange/green plastic bag from underneath his clothing and put the money and cigarettes inside the bag.  The male employee was not injured. The suspect fled the Convenience Store and went right on Chebucto Road, southbound on Windsor Street and right onto Duncan Street. .

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 35-40 years old, 5’8” in height, thin build, short brown hair.  He was wearing a grey ball cap with a blue emblem, blue medical mask, clear medical gloves, black long sleeved hoodie, black pants and  black sneakers with white soles.

Multiple police units attended the scene and actively looked for the suspect. A K-9 officer attended the scene with the police service dog and followed the suspect’s track behind 6092 Quinpool Road where the track was lost, it is believed the suspect got into a vehicle at this location and fled the area.

The investigation will be assigned to the Integrated General Investigative Section.
