Colchester County District RCMP charge man wanted on province-wide arrest warrant after he flees police

January 31, 2025, Colchester County, Nova Scotia… Colchester County District RCMP has charged a man wanted for multiple offences after he fled from police. 

At approximately 10 a.m. on January 30,Colchester County District RCMP observed a vehicle in Lower Truro associated to a man who was wanted in relation to intimate partner violence related offences, and who has pending charges for multiple firearms offences.

Officers attempted a traffic stop on Hwy. 236 in Lower Truro. The vehicle didn’t stop and continued at a high rate of speed. Officers followed the vehicle. The RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources and Renewables (DNRR) air services were called in to assist.  

   Responding officers deployed spike belts on Hwy. 236 then on Hwy. 215 in East Hants to stop the vehicle. The suspect vehicle was damaged but was able to continue fleeing police.  

  From Hwy. 215, the suspect vehicle accessed the shoulder of Hwy. 102 then traveled northbound in the southbound lanes. With the assistance of DNRR air services, the vehicle was observed attempting to turn around and head south in the southbound lane.  

At this time, the vehicle was intercepted on Hwy. 102 between Exit 11 and Exit 12 by the RCMP ERT and Police Dog Services. Officers safely arrested the driver, 33-year-old Stephen Joseph “Dakota” Maloney, and the passenger.  

Officers learned the passenger was a victim; they were released from custody. Maloney reported minor injuries and was transported to hospital by EHS.

“We understand how unsettling it must’ve been for those travelling along Hwy. 102 and witnessed the suspect vehicle driving erratically in the wrong direction,” says Supt. Sean Auld, Officer in Charge of Support Services. “Our officers continually assessed the situation from a public safety perspective, and working in collaboration with DNRR, officers relied on their training to safely stop the vehicle and arrest the offender.” 

Maloney has been charged with: 

  • Flight from Peace Officer 
  • Dangerous Operation 
  • Operation While Prohibited 
  • Forcible Confinement 
  • Failure to Comply with Order 

He appeared in Truro Provincial Court on January 30 and was remanded into custody pending future court appearances.

The investigation, led by the Colchester County District RCMP with assistance of RCMP Police Dog Services, is ongoing.

Lunenburg County District RCMP requesting public assistance with break and enter investigations

January 30, 2025, New Germany, Nova Scotia… Lunenburg County District RCMP is seeking the public’s assistance in relation to a series of break and enters that have recently occurred in New Germany and Barss Corner.

On January 27, at approximately 2:48 a.m., Lunenburg County District RCMP was called to a gas station in Barss Corner where at least one person tried to enter the business, triggering the business’s alarm. No items were taken but the building was damaged during the break and enter.

Later that morning, Lunenburg County District RCMP responded to a workshop in Barss Corner where at least one person had gained access to the shop overnight and taken approximately $8,000 of tools.

On January 29, Lunenburg County District RCMP members were called to a business in New Germany where at least one person had entered the business overnight and took approximately $4,000 of equipment.

There is no suspect description available at this time. Lunenburg County District RCMP, with assistance of RCMP Forensic Identification Services, is investigating and asking the public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity in the area.

Polaris side by side stolen in Rocklin, Pictou County

On January 24th, 2025 police were alerted to a break and enter in Rocklin, Pictou County. A Polaris Side X Side was stolen, and some tools.

Digby RCMP is looking to locate a stolen Outboard Boat Motor. The Boat Motor was reported stolen from a residence in Weymouth, NS over night on 2025/01/11.

The Boat Motor is described as follows:

  • Model: 20DK3LRTC

Lunenburg District RCMP is seeking to locate black 2014 VW Jetta

Lunenburg District RCMP is seeking to locate the following vehicle which was stolen from the Wal-Mart Parking Lot at 60 Pine Grove Road in Cookville, Nova Scotia at approximately 1030 hours on 2025-01-23.

The vehicle is described as follows:

-Black 2014 VW Jetta, Nova Scotia License Plate: HEY 989

-Black winter steely rims.

-Back windows tinted.

-Passenger side rocker panel has foil on it.

Colchester County District RCMP charges several people after firearms stolen

January 24, 2025, Upper Onslow, Nova Scotia… Colchester County District RCMP has arrested and charged several people after a residential break and enter where multiple firearms were stolen.

On January 20, at approximately 5:50 p.m., RCMP officers responded to a report of a break and enter that had occurred at a residence on Adam McCallum Rd. earlier that morning.

Officers learned that three men in masks had entered the home and stolen a variety of items, including two shotguns and a rifle. Three residents were home at the time and their demands for the men to leave were ignored. The men eventually left. No one reported injuries related to the incident.

On January 22, Colchester County District RCMP, with assistance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team and Truro Police Service, executed a search warrant at a residence on Lockhart Ave. in Truro as part of the investigation. Officers arrested six people. During the execution of the search warrant, police located and seized items related to the offences. Lockhart Ave. was closed while the police operation was underway; officers appreciated the cooperation of the public in the area.

Alexander Grady, 28, of Truro, and Tyler Burns, 27, of Truro, are both charged with the following offences:

  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
  • Breaking and Entering and Stealing Firearm
  • Breaking and Entering and Committing an Indictable Offence
  • Disguise with Intent to Commit an Indictable Offence

Burns is also facing an additional charge of for Breach of a Release Order.

Grady and Burns had first court appearances on January 24 at Truro Provincial Court and have been remanded into custody, pending future court appearances.

Another woman arrested was found to be breaching conditions related to a previous, unrelated investigation and has been charged with Fail to Comply with Release Order, unrelated to the break and enter.

Three other people have been released without charges.

The investigation is ongoing and is being led by Colchester County District RCMP General Investigation Section and Street Crime Enforcement Unit, with assistance of the RCMP Forensic Identification Section.

Police investigate shooting

Halifax Regional Police is investigating a shooting that occurred yesterday.

At approximately 9:30 p.m., officers were called to the Dartmouth General Hospital after an unconscious man with a gunshot wound was dropped off at the hospital’s front door. The man, 23, is now in stable condition.

The investigation is in the early stages, but investigators believe this was a targeted incident and not a broad threat to the general public. 

There is no evidence to suggest this incident is connected to the shooting in Dartmouth on Sunday morning.

Missing person: Help the RCMP find Murdock “Kyle” MacKinnon

January 21, 2025, Tantallon, Nova Scotia… RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment is asking for the public’s assistance in locating 42-year-old Murdock “Kyle” MacKinnon.

MacKinnon is described as 6-foot-0 and has brown hair. MacKinnon was last seen in Tantallon on January 18, 2025. He may be driving a black Ford Flex with a white top, with Ontario licence plate CZZC674.

When someone goes missing, it has deep and far-reaching impacts for the person and those who know them. We ask that people spread the word through social media respectfully.

High-Risk Offender Notification: George Durling

In accordance with the Nova Scotia Release of High-Risk Offender Information Protocol, Halifax Regional Police is advising citizens, particularly those in Dartmouth, that a high-risk offender is residing in the community.

George Durling, 57, has been granted statutory release at the Jamieson Community Correctional Centre in Dartmouth.

Durling is a federal offender serving a two-year sentence for convictions of:

–Distribution of Child Pornography

–Print/Publish Child Pornography (x3)

–Failure to Comply with Probation Order (x2)

–Harassing Communication and Indecent Communication

Durling was known to text and call random phone numbers with sexually explicit content.

These offences occurred in both Truro and Maitland Nova Scotia.

Durling has previously been sentenced to:

–Three years of probation related to a sexual assault in Manitoba (1992)

–Eighteen months of probation for an assault in Truro (2019)

–One year of probation for an indecent act in Truro (2022)

Durling’s probation and parole conditions limit him from being around children under 16 years of age. He must not consume alcohol, use or possess any device that allows him to access the internet and may only possess one unlocked phone that can be monitored by his parole supervisor. He must reside at a specific place, report all relationships and have no contact with victims of his prior offenses.

Halifax police investigate double shooting in Dartmouth with one deceased victim

Halifax Regional Police is investigating a suspicious death following an incident that occured in Dartmouth early this morning.

At 2:53 a.m. police responded to multiple reports of gunshots being fired in the area of Lahey Road and Clarence Street in Dartmouth. Officers located two people suffering from gunshot wounds and immediately provided first aid.  An adult male and an adult female were both transported to hospital by Emergency Health Services where the male victim succumbed to his injuries. The female’s injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones at this difficult time.

The investigation is being led by investigators with the Special Investigation Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division.  Officers will have a visible presence at the scene as the investigation continues.

The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service is conducting an autopsy.  Further updates will be provided once they are available.
