Update on Barrington shooting incident

February 22, 2019, Barrington, Nova Scotia . . . Charges have been laid against six people following an incident where a man was injured after being assaulted by a group of people. The incident occurred on Scotts Mill Rd. in Barrington, in the early morning hours of February 13. A woman was also injured in the incident.

James Leslie Gerald Kane, 40, of Barrington, was arrested on February 14, appeared in Yarmouth Provincial Court on February 15, and is charged with:

  • Attempted Murder Using a Firearm (2 counts)
  • Unlawful Confinement (1 count)
  • Assault with a Weapon (1 count)
  • Point Firearm (2 counts)
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose (1 count)
  • Careless Use Firearm (1 count)
  • Discharging a Firearm with Intent to Cause Bodily Harm (2 counts)
  • Possession of a Firearm Contrary to an Order (1 count)

He appeared on February 21 has been held in custody to appear in court in Yarmouth Provincial Court on March 6.

Steven Kyle Scott, 29, of Barrington, was arrested on February 14, appeared in Yarmouth Provincial Court on February 15, and is charged with:

  • Attempted Murder Using a Firearm (1 count)
  • Unlawful Confinement (1 count)
  • Assault with a Weapon (1 count)

He is being held in custody and is appearing in court in Yarmouth on February 28.

Terry James Decker, 42, of Jordan Falls, was arrested on February 14, appeared in Yarmouth Provincial Court on February 15, and is charged with:

  • Attempted Murder Using a Firearm (1 count)
  • Unlawful Confinement (1 count)
  • Assault with a Weapon (1 count)
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose (1 count)

He appeared in court on February 21, and is being held in custody to appear in court in Yarmouth Provincial Court on March 6.

Kristin Lynn Thistle, 31, of Barrington, was arrested on February 14, appeared in Yarmouth Provincial Court on February 15, and is charged with:

  • Attempted Murder Using a Firearm (1 count)
  • Unlawful Confinement (1 count)
  • Assault with a Weapon (1 count)

She was released on conditions and is scheduled to return to court on April 3.

Carmen Steven Shaw, 20, of Barrington, was arrested on February 16, and appeared in Yarmouth Provincial Court on February 19. He is charged with:

  • Attempted Murder Using a Firearm (1 count)
  • Unlawful Confinement (1 count)
  • Assault with a Weapon (1 count)
  • Obstruction (1 count)

He appeared in court on February 21 and has been released from custody on conditions. He is scheduled to return to Yarmouth Provincial Court on April 18.

Keaton Hiltz, 24, of Clyde River, was arrested on February 16, and appeared in Yarmouth Provincial Court on February 19. He is charged with:

  • Attempted Murder Using a Firearm (1 count)
  • Unlawful Confinement (1 count)
  • Assault with a Weapon (1 count)

He was released on conditions and is scheduled to return to court on March 20.

The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the RCMP Southwest Nova Major Crimes Unit.
