Police continue to seek public assistance in investigation into the death of Ryan Michael Sawyer

Investigators in the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division are continuing to ask for the public’s assistance identifying a potential witness in relation to the 2022 death of Ryan Michael Sawyer.

At approximately 1:15 a.m. on December 24, 2022, police responded to a report of a disturbance involving several people in the 1700 block of Brunswick Street in Halifax. Officers located Ryan Sawyer unresponsive on the sidewalk, just east of Brunswick Street on Prince Street. He was transported to hospital where he later died. The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service conducted an autopsy and ruled the manner of death to be a homicide.

Investigators are interested in speaking to a man who was in the area at the time. He is believed to have recorded the incident and may have information that could assist the investigation. The man is described as Black, in his 20s to 30s, tall with a thin build. At the time, he was wearing a black coat and a black shirt with a gold symbol. Investigators are also asking anyone the man may have shared the video with to contact police.

This potential witness is not a suspect in the death and investigators are not seeking additional suspects at this time.

Police continue to investigate the murder of Chauntel Lizette MacIntyre

Today marks the first anniversary of the murder of Chauntel Lizette MacIntyre and the Special Investigation Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division continues to investigate the case.

On May 17, 2022, at approximately 12:45 a.m. police responded to a report of an injured person in the area of Sylvia Avenue and Herring Cove Road. Officers located 37-year-old Chauntel Lizette MacIntyre who had been stabbed. She was taken to hospital where she later died as a result of her injuries. The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service conducted an autopsy and ruled the manner of death to be a homicide.

Investigators believe there are people who have information that could help solve Chauntel’s murder. We hope the passage of time will encourage them to do the right thing and come forward with what they know. The smallest piece of information may be just what is needed to progress the investigation.

Police investigate assault causing bodily harm

Police are investigating an assault causing bodily harm that occurred in Halifax last month and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect.

On April 3, at approximately 5:40 p.m. police responded to a report of an assault at Parklane Mall. Two men had been skateboarding inside the mall and were harassing a woman. A security officer attempted to get the men to leave. One of the men began to assault the security officer, knocked him to the ground and continued striking him until a bystander intervened.

The suspect is described as white, 19-20 years old, approximately 5’10”, clean shaven, blond hair, wearing a tan hoodie and carrying a skateboard.

Police investigate hate-motivated crime

Halifax Regional Police is investigating an incident of property damage where hate is believed to be a motivating factor.

On May 7 police received a report of property damage that occurred in the Spryfield area of Halifax. At approximately 7:30 p.m. two youths ripped down a Pride flag that was displayed at the residence and then fled the area on foot. The youths are described as being in their early teens.

This is the second report Halifax Regional Police has recently received of property damage where hate is believed to be a motivating factor that involved a Pride flag. On April 5 at approximately 2:55 p.m. four youths destroyed a Pride flag and another Pride item that were displayed in the yard of a residence in the north-end of Halifax. The youths are described as males, 10 to 12 years-old, with one of the youths having dark curly hair. This incident has been investigated; however, the youths have not been identified.

We recognize that incidents of this nature can be very harmful to our community. We take incidents that are believed to be motivated by hate towards an identifiable group very seriously. If someone finds themselves exposed to behavior that is offensive, threatening or intimidating, we encourage them to report it to police to investigate so we can determine if criminal offences have occurred. Even if the investigation does not find criminal wrongdoing in that specific incident, it is important to have it on record.

Meteghan RCMP investigating shots fired at a residence

May 12, 2023, Meteghan, Nova Scotia…Meteghan RCMP is investigating shots fired into a home on May 11, 2023.

At approximately 7:25 a.m. yesterday, Meteghan RCMP responded to a complaint of shots fired into a home on Hwy. 1 in Church Point.

Officers learned that the occupant of the home heard a window break at about 1:13 a.m. that morning and then checked the window and damage at 7:20 a.m. just before calling police.  The damage is consistent with shots being fired at the home from outside. No one was injured in the incident.

At this time, investigators do not believe the incident occurred at random.

The investigation is ongoing with assistance of the RCMP Forensic Identification Services.

Police continue to investigate murder of Tanya Jean Brooks

Today marks the 14th anniversary of the murder of Tanya Jean Brooks and the Special Investigation Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division continues to investigate the case.

Tanya was found deceased beside the former St. Patrick’s-Alexandra School on Maitland Street in Halifax on May 11, 2009, at approximately 2:20 p.m. Investigators were able to trace her movements until approximately 9 p.m. on May 10 and they urge anyone who witnessed anything in the area of the school around that time to contact police.

Investigators believe Tanya knew her assailant(s) and that there are people who have information that could help solve her murder. We hope that the passage of time will encourage them to do the right thing and come forward with what they know. It is never too late to come forward and the smallest piece of information may be just what is needed to progress the investigation.

Tanya’s family will be hosting a memorial walk in her honor on Wednesday, May 10 at 1 p.m. from police headquarters at 1975 Gottingen Street to 2277 Maitland Street.

Tanya’s case is part of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program which offers cash rewards of up to $150,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of person(s) responsible for specified major unsolved crimes. The amount of the award will be based on the investigative value of the information provided.

Police investigate break and enter

Police are investigating a break and enter that occurred in Halifax earlier this week.

On May 2 at approximately 1:45 a.m. two men attempted to gain entry to Herring Cove Market at 565 Herring Cove Road causing damage to the store. The two suspects left the area on foot.

The first suspect is described as a Black man, approximately 6’ to 6’3” tall, with a slim build wearing a flat brim red hat, a dark hooded sweatshirt, dark coloured pants, white shoes and a face mask.

The second suspect is described as a white man, approximately 5’7 to 5’10” tall with a slim build, wearing a brown hood, dark hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, dark shoes and a gray face mask.

Police investigate sexual assault

Police are investigating a sexual assault that occurred in Halifax earlier this week.

On May 1 police received a report of a sexual assault that had occurred earlier in the day in the area of the Mainland Common baseball field adjacent to the Halifax Transit Lacewood Terminal. At approximately 1 p.m. a man approached a woman who was not known to him at the transit terminal, luring the victim to an area of the baseball field and sexually assaulted her.

The suspect is described as a Black man in his 30s, approximately 5’9” tall, thin build with brown hair and facial hair. He was wearing a dark-coloured winter jacket and sweatpants.

well-being.

RCMP/HRP Integrated Criminal Investigation Division seeking information in armed robbery investigation

May 2, 2023, Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia… The RCMP/HRP Integrated Criminal Investigation Division is seeking information in relation to an armed robbery that occurred in Hatchet Lake.

Shortly after 6 p.m. last evening, Halifax District RCMP responded to a report of an armed robbery at a pharmacy on Prospect Rd. Officers learned that a man entered the pharmacy, obtained a safe injection kit, then brandished a handgun and demanded narcotics before fleeing the scene on foot. The pharmacy’s employees were not physically injured.

The suspect is described as white and 5-foot-10. He was dressed in black with grey shoes and had a bandana over his face.

It’s estimated the man obtained more than 2,100 narcotic tablets of various strengths.

The investigation is ongoing and being led by the RCMP/HRP Integrated Criminal Investigation Division.

Police investigate shooting

Halifax Regional Police are investigating after a building was shot at in Dartmouth early yesterday morning.

On April 30 at approximately 10 a.m. police received a report that employees at Carson Exports came in to work to find bullet holes in the building located at 550 Windmill Road. Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that at approximately 5:10 a.m. a man approached the building and shot at it before fleeing the area in a vehicle. No one was in the building at the time of the incident.

The suspect is described as approximately 6’ tall with a medium build and wearing dark pants, a brown jacket, a face mask and gloves. The vehicle is described as a dark-coloured four-door sedan.
