Police investigate theft of artwork

Halifax Regional Police is requesting the public’s assistance with the investigation into the theft of artwork from a Halifax residence in November 2024.

On November 25, police received a report that three pieces of artwork, had been stolen from a residence in the 1900 block of Cambridge Street in Halifax. 

Each piece is described as a framed Christmas card by Maud Lewis. The cards are approximately 7” x 5” in size. The cards are matted and framed and each believed to be valued in excess of ten thousand dollars.

RCMP solve murder in Centerville

Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit charge man with Murder

January 13, 2025, Centreville, Nova Scotia… The Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit has charged a man with Murder (second degree).

On January 11, at approximately 3 a.m., Kings District RCMP, Kentville Volunteer Fire Department, and EHS, responded to a report of a structure fire on Anthony Ave. in Centreville. Upon arrival, first responders observed that a home was engulfed in flames and fire crews were able to extinguish the fire. Six people were able to escape the home safely prior to the arrival of first responders and none were injured.

During the course of the investigation, a 22-year-old woman was located deceased inside the home. From the initial information and evidence gathered, investigators believed that both the death and the fire were suspicious in nature. The Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit (MCU) took carriage of the investigation and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the woman’s death was the result of homicide. The woman’s death was the result of intimate partner violence.

On January 11, at approximately 12 p.m., at the request of Southwest Nova RCMP MCU, Annapolis District RCMP located and arrested a 28-year-old man on Hwy. 8 near Lequille. The man was transported to the Bridgetown RCMP Detachment and was later transferred to the New Minas RCMP Detachment, where he remained in custody overnight.

On January 12, Justin Joseph Benjamin, of Centreville, was charged with Murder and Arson with Disregard to Human Life. Benjamin has been remanded into custody and will appear in Kentville Provincial Court at 9:30 a.m. on January 13.

The investigation is continuing and is being assisted by Kings District RCMP, Annapolis District RCMP, the Kentville Police Service, the Northeast Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit, RCMP Police Dog Services, RCMP Forensic Identification Services, the Office of the Fire Marshal, and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service.

Wanted Nathan Timothy Hale

January 9, 2025, Westville, Nova Scotia… Pictou County District RCMP is seeking information on the whereabouts of a man currently wanted on a province-wide arrest warrant.

Nathan Timothy Hale, 38, of Westville, is wanted and faces a number of charges, including:

  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (six counts)
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Failure to Comply with a Release Order (seven counts)

Hale is described as 5-foot-10, 210 pounds. He has dark brown hair and brown eyes.

Police have made several attempts to locate Hale, and are requesting assistance from the public.

Hale may be in Ontario or Alberta.

Police seeking information after shots fired in Cole Harbour

January 8, 2025, Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia… The RCMP/HRP Integrated Criminal Investigation Division is seeking information in relation to shots fired in Cole Harbour.

On January 5, at approximately 7:45 a.m., RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment responded to a report of shots fired on Amaranth Cres.

At the scene, officers found an unoccupied vehicle parked on the roadway and a nearby home with damage consistent with that of a shooting. Information gathered indicates that local residents heard gunshots sometime between 2:30 a.m. and 3:00 a.m.

There were no reports of injuries.

Investigators have identified a sport utility vehicle involved in the incident. At this time, the incident is not believed to be random.

The investigation, led by the RCMP/HRP Integrated Criminal Investigation Division with assistance from the RCMP Forensic Identification Section, is ongoing.

Police continue to recover stolen bicycles

Halifax Regional Police continue to recover bicycles and scooters believed to have been stolen throughout the region. In some instances, stolen property is recovered during an investigation and other times, found property is turned over to us through the kindness of the public.

If your bike was recently lost or stolen, and you would like to see if it’s been recovered by police, HRP’s Lost & Found Property can be reached at 902-490-5232.

You will be asked to provide some form of proof of ownership before property can be turned over to you. If you have limited proof of ownership, providing a picture of the bike that shows distinguishing features or accessories would be accepted.

It is good practice to keep your bike locked up, in a well-lit and well-travelled area. Take a photo of your bike and record its serial number as this will assist in identifying it if it becomes lost or stolen.

Cyclists can also register for the free 529 Garage program, which can help reunite owners with recovered bicycles. 

HRP encourages people to report their bikes stolen to police as soon as possible with as much information as possible, including the serial number, make, model, speed, colour, and any distinguishing markings and accessories. You can file a police report online or by calling 902-490-5016.

Help solve stolen camper trailer case in Kingston

On December 20, 2024 a camper was stolen from a residential property in the Kingston area. There were no witnesses identified, but members were able to view what appeared to be a dark coloured pickup entering the property, hooking up to the camper and towing it away. Police file 2024 1858459 refers.
