Charges laid following Yarmouth shooting
February 6, 2020, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia…The RCMP has charged a 22-year-old man from Yarmouth in relation to the February 4 shooting that left a 17-year-old female with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
At approximately 10:10 p.m. on February 4, Yarmouth RCMP responded to a call about a possible gunshot victim. The victim was located inside a taxi on Main St. when the driver flagged down police out of concern for their passenger.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the member observed serious but non-life-threatening injuries to the passenger and she was transported to hospital by EHS.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim had been socializing with several people at a home on Cliff St. where she was shot, and that the victim and suspect were known to each other.
On February 5 at approximately 7 p.m., Yarmouth Town RCMP searched a home on Butler St. in Yarmouth and arrested the accused without incident.
Scott Alan Smith Jr. is charged with:
- Careless Use of a Firearm
- Pointing a Firearm
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
- Possession of a Firearm Knowing Possession is Unauthorized
- Possession of a Prohibited Firearm with Ammunition
- Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm
Smith was held in custody overnight and is scheduled to appear in Yarmouth Provincial Court today.
The investigation is ongoing and being led by Yarmouth Town RCMP with assistance from Yarmouth Town GIS, Yarmouth/Claire Street Crime Enforcement Unit and the Yarmouth County Detachment.
